CHAPTER 22

Woodbine, Virginia

That Night

Rob crawled up that hillside, clutching his Remington 700 sniper rifle by the pistol grip and facing that deserted country road in northern Virginia. A half-hour drive from Washington, DC and with far fewer people milling around, the location was a good spot for a secret meeting.

The place was remote, to say the least. The only sounds that filled the air were tree limbs fluttering softly and the occasional hooting of an owl in the distance. Fireflies glowed all around as they sailed along in the calm wind. A whip-poor-will sang a song that echoed across the landscape from somewhere nearby as Rob flipped the rifle’s bipod and pulled the buttstock into his right shoulder, bracing the top with his left hand.

Rob removed the dust cover on his rifle scope. He peered through the glass just in time to see Congressman Mattie arrive in his Navigator, parked at the edge of the roadway with the headlights still beaming into the darkness. Rob glanced down at his watch. It was 9:30 p.m.

“Right on time,” he said.

Rob watched Mattie through the driver’s window as he and his two bodyguards waited in silence. The congressman just sat there, eyes fixated on the road in front of him and seemingly staring into space. With the built-in range finder, Rob determined the distance to the road at three hundred meters. He began clicking the elevation turret on top of his scope. At that range, it would be like child’s play to a veteran sniper.

Rob inserted a full magazine into the rifle, tapped the bottom, and cycled a round into the chamber.

“All right,” he mumbled. “Where you at, Mister Senator?”

Senator Paul had eluded him so far. But, Rob wasn’t going to allow him to slip by this time. He rested on top of that hill, between pine trees and high, wavy grass, and trained his eyes on the road opposite the congressman. Close to twenty minutes later, as Rob watched congressman Mattie playing on his phone, he detected a flash of light coming from far to his left. Rob turned the scope just in time to see a set of bright vehicle lights coming down the hill a half-mile away.

He observed as the vehicle got closer with each second and slid in the gravel at the side of the road as it came to a rest a couple dozen feet from the congressman’s car. Congressman Mattie flashed his brights toward the senator. Senator Paul stepped out of the car, his four-man security team surrounding him. The congressman got out with his guards and wandered between the two vehicles.

“Randy,” Senator Paul said as the congressman approached, “been waiting long?”

Both men were now clearly in Rob’s line of sight as he viewed them through the glass.

“A few minutes,” Mattie replied. “Thanks for meeting me.”

The senator stood there with his arms crossed.

“I guess you haven’t heard, then,” Paul said. “Have you?”

“Heard what?” asked Mattie.

The congressman had no idea what the senator was talking about.

“That damn psycho!” the senator yelled.
